Creating a Kitchen Nook

Updated: Jul 17, 2018

I recently renovated my apartment and one of my favourite new additions is definitely my kitchen nook! Prior to the renovation, this area was just an awkward forgotten space off my kitchen that housed our old wine fridge. Now it’s a perfect place to eat breakfast in the morning or to curl up with a good book in the afternoon. The nook has added instant charm and coziness to formerly lacklustre space and its really easy to recreate in your own home.

I worked with our contractor to design the built-in window seat that doubles as much needed kitchen storage. Then I had the seat cushion custom made in a bold woven stripe. While custom upholstery is pretty pricey (my cushion was around $350), I offset the cost by choosing inexpensive fabric (sourced from IKEA) and throw pillows for the backrest, which in total came in under $100. Also, a bonus was that I had extra fabric from the seat cushion that my wonderful mum sewed into one of the backrest pillows.

For the final details, I repurposed a hand-me-down side table and styled it with some magazines and fresh flowers to create a really inviting space to lounge.

You can still recreate this look if you don’t have a built-in window seat by using a bench (IKEA has a great one) against a window. Just use your creativity!
